It was a mixed night for United’s stars at the World Cup as two players made it to the round of 16, while one went out in rather embarrassing manner. Patrice Evra’s World Cup is over as his France team crashed out after losing 2-1 to hosts South Africa. Evra, who is the captain of his national team, was left out of the starting line-up after a series of events which started after a bust-up between Chelsea star Anelka and coach Domenech. The French team failed to win any of their three group matches, and went out bottom of the pool which only one point. This low point in his country’s football history has left Evra devastated.

“I am deeply upset, even if it won’t change anything,” Evra said. “Tonight I feel a bit like (we are) a small football nation, and it hurts.”

Meanwhile, new signing Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez has progressed to the next round at the expense of Evra. His Mexico side went through along Uruguay from Group A. Mexico will play red hot Argentina in the next round. The other United player to reach the knock-out stages is Park Ji-Sung. The South Korean skipper continued his good form against Nigeria, and was named man of the match for second time in this World Cup. South Korea will meet Uruguay in the next round.
