Debate: Was Gerrard’s back pass an intentional gift for Chelsea?
May 2, 2010
To be fair, today Liverpool were pressing Chelsea till Drogba made it 1-0. The back pass was absolutely shocking and unsurprisingly it was the Liverpool captain himself who made this costly ‘error’.
But the question which many United fans will ask for years to come is, was it really an error or simply a deliberate favour for Chelsea?
Gerrard absolutely loathes United, there is no doubt about that. After this is the same guy who said:
“Growing up in Huyton, I was taught to loathe United, their fans, players, manager, kit-man, mascot — everyone associated with Old Trafford.
And during 90 minutes of football I want United to die.”
Looking at the video replays (picture above), one thing becomes obvious, Gerrard’s line of sight was clear and there is no way he did not see Drogba. So either it was a master blunder, or you know what…
Gerrard does have a history of making back pass errors. One such incident was in Euro 2004 when his back pass gifted the match to France. In 2005/06 season his back pass at Highbury resulted in an easy goal for Henry. Videos can be seen below.
Do you think Gerrard deliberately gifted the goal to Chelsea?

Most definitely deliberate…….. Gerrard hates United and he proved it yet again….
however delibarate it was or not the ‘error’ was, Chelsea was bound to win.
You used the LOS (Line of Sight) rule but you clearly have not realised that line of sight means you can see something! Gerrard has his back turned to Drogba and is actually facing away. You LOS is from the back of his head to Drogba. What a numpty!!! When Gerrard turned to shoot he clearly could not see Drogba until he wrapped his foot around the ball and by then it was too late. Stop crying and just admit Chelsea are better than Man Utd this season. They have played with class while United have shown spirit but more than often limped through unconvincingly and scored so many undeserved last minute winners. Put it simplu United were not good enough. And if it wasn’t for Rooney United would probably be Mid Table at best. Well played Chelsea. Hope you get it.

First of all the article does not say anywhere that Gerrard necessarily back passed to favor Chelsea. The purpose was to only asses the situation which led to be back pass. It is clear from the replays that Gerrard could clearly see Drogba at that time and thus the possibility of Gerrard not seeing Drogba is ruled out. Please do look at the replay again, Gerrard is infact facing towards the Liverpool goal and his back is NOT towards Drogba as you suggested.
United finishing mid table? You’re definitely a Chelsea fan who knows very less about football. How many times have United finished even out of top 3 since 1992? Not even once. Meanwhile Chelsea have often finished mid table, as low as 14th even.
Cheers!
this truly proves that manchester united fans are simply sore losers and cannot accept anything.
diaby own goal. intentional much? i’m sure it was. his LOS was pretty damn clear.
of course he loathes United, he’s human isn’t he?
Great pass from Stevie G.
