Euro 2008: England fail to qualify as United players watched from the sidelines

November 21, 2007

England 2-3 CroatiaIt was a disappointing night in Wembley in the end, where England lost 2-3 to Croatia and hence failed qualify for next year’s Euro 2008. England needed only a point from this game but failed to deliver yet again.

Wayne Rooney (injury), Rio Ferdinand (suspension), Gary Neville (injury), Michael Carrick (injury) were all missing from the game, while Owen Hargreaves and Wes Brown were on the bench while England’s dream were shattered right before their eyes.

David Beckham played the whole second half and provided the cross while led to Crouch’s goal.

Now United fans will rely on the Portuguese duo Ronaldo and Nani to make them proud at the tournament. While goalkeepers Edwin van der Sar, captain of Holland, and Tomasz Kuszczak, Poland, will also feature for their respective national sides.

November 21, 2007

Carlos Tevez was sent-off as Argentina suffered their first defeat of the World Cup qualifying campaign when Colombia fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.

Tevez saw red after 24 minutes after clashing with Colombia defender Ruben Bustos before Lionel Messi’s brilliant solo goal handed Argentina the lead 10 minutes later.

Bustos curled home a brilliant second-half free-kick to level the match before Dairo Moreno scored eight minutes from time to seal the win.

Barca fans express their ‘loyalty’ by not buying Ronaldinho shirts!

November 21, 2007

RonaldinhoBARCELONA, Spain - Barcelona fans have responded to Ronaldinho’s recent poor form by shunning his No. 10 shirt in favor of those worn by teammates Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry.

According to El Periodico the Brazilian midfielder’s shirt was the most popular among Barca fans last June. But sales have plunged 40% in the last four months compared to the same period last year, the paper said, quoting industry sources.

Recent lacklustre performances by the two-time world player of the year have “begun to have alarming and negative repercussions on his commercial image,” it said.

Sales of the shirts of Argentinian-born striker Messi, who made the team in 2005, and Frenchman Henry, transfered from Arsenal this year, are now more popular than those of Ronaldinho, who has been at the Catalan club since 2003.

Ronaldinho has come under fire in the Spanish press this season both for some abject performances on the pitch and unprofessional behaviour off it.

Gary Neville makes football’s all-time top 100, but Best, Law and Cantona miss out!

November 20, 2007

Neville The AFS (Association of Football Statisticians) have tried to prove who is the greatest ever player by analysing every football fact and figure over the last 100 years.

The results are fascinating, if a little perplexing, with England’s (and ManUtd captain) right-back Gary Neville rated the 86th greatest…. ever.

Pele is No 1. No surprise there, but you might imagine Diego Maradona, who many feel to be the finest footballer ever to grace a pitch, to be a close second.

Kaka: Ronaldo is best!

November 18, 2007

Kaka and Ronaldo

Kaka is the hot favourite to win this year’s prize, with Ronaldo likely to be fighting it out with Andrea Pirlo and Lionel Messi for second and third place.”I would vote for Cristiano Ronaldo as the best in the world,” Kaka told Brazilian newspaper ‘Globoesporte.’

“Not just for his quality, but also as he has been able to do so well with the Portugal jersey. Lionel Messi is a great player, but he has not won any titles this year.”

Kaka also spoke about his hopes to play at the World Cup in 2014. Brazil were recently awarded the rights to host the event.

“I would love to be the captain of Brazil in 2014,” said the 25-year-old.

“I think I’ll still be playing by then and it would be a marvellous experience, but I am aware for the moment that these are images I can only dream of.”
